What is a warship? Given that ships equipped with weapons have formed the core of naval fleets for centuries it seems a simple enough question. But with increasing investments in armed, uncrewed vessels – some as large as traditional ships – and with new cross-domain operations facing fleets, that definition is shifting. We look at the role of warships in the modern navy, the challenges facing them and the technology making them fit for 21st-century sea warfare.

Administering fast and effective first aid on the front line is a matter of life and death and having access to cutting-edge combat-compatible medical technology can make all the difference. We take a look at the latest equipment design to ensure the best outcome for individuals even when medical professionals aren’t available.

Elsewhere in the issue, we look at the US Department of Defense’s Joint All-Domain Command and Control concept to connect sensors from all military services, naval digital transformation programmes and how to achieve trust from AI engines in defence simulations.

As part of our Future Tech Hub partnership with DSEI, we also present a video interview with Blighter Surveillance Systems. If you’re going to be at DSEI next month, come and visit the Global Defence Technology stand and get in touch to tell us what you’re exhibiting.
