Hiring activity related to artificial intelligence increased by a CAGR of 74% in the aerospace & defence industry since 2020

The global aerospace & defence industry witnessed a 74% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to artificial intelligence since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 42% year-on-year in 2021 and by 113% year-on-year in 2022.
Notably, computer and mathematical occupations jobs accounted for 53% share of the global aerospace & defence industry’s artificial intelligence-related new job postings since 2020.
Computer and mathematical occupations drive artificial intelligence-related hiring activity
Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 53%, emerged as the top artificial intelligence-related job roles within the aerospace & defence industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 30% year-on-year in 2021 and by 79% year-on-year in 2022.
Architecture and engineering occupations came in second with a share of 17%, with new job postings rising by 70% year-on-year in 2021 and by 166% year-on-year in 2022.
The other prominent artificial intelligence roles include management occupations (9% share) and business and financial operations occupations (5% share).
The top five companies in the aerospace & defence industry accounted for 60% of hiring activity
The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Huntington Ingalls Industries, RTX, Leidos, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin. Together they accounted for a combined share of 60% of all artificial intelligence-related new jobs in the aerospace & defence industry.
Huntington Ingalls Industries posted 7,298 artificial intelligence-related jobs since 2020, followed by RTX with 6,553 jobs, and Leidos with 3,731 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.
New job postings by Huntington Ingalls Industries increased by 124% year-on-year in 2021 and by 1472% year-on-year in 2022, while those by RTX increased by 54% in 2021 and fell by 56% in 2022.
Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 78% share of total new job postings since 2020
The largest share of artificial intelligence-related new job postings in the aerospace & defence industry since 2020 was in the US with 78%, followed by France (5%) and the UK (4%). The share represented by the US decreased by one percentage point from 78% in 2021 to 77% in 2022.
