Patent applications related to IoT witnessed 15% average annual decline in the aerospace & defence industry since 2021

The global aerospace & defence industry experienced a 15% annual average decline in the number of IoT-related patent applications between 2021 and 2023. The total number of IoT-related grants decreased by an AAGR of 6% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database.
Notably, the number of IoT-related patent applications in the aerospace & defence industry was 2,042 since 2021, while 1,441 applications were granted.
The top five assignees by filings accounted for 16% of patent applications
Analysis of patent applications by assignee shows that Boeing filed the most IoT patents within the aerospace & defence industry since 2021. The company filed 78 IoT-related patents since 2021.
It was followed by Huawei Investment & Holding (48 applications), RTX (47 applications), SZ DJI Technology (27 applications), and Thales (27 applications).
The top five assignees by grants accounted for 22% of successful patent grants
Analysis of patent grants by assignee shows that Boeing was granted 98 patents related to IoT within the aerospace & defence industry since 2021. It was followed by SZ DJI Technology (46 grants), RTX (28 grants), FedEx (26 grants), and Byrna Technologies (21 grants).
Patent activity was driven by the US with a 44% share of total patent publications
The largest share of IoT-related patent publications in the aerospace & defence industry since 2021 was held by the US with 44%, followed by China (33%) and South Korea (7%).
